Conductors of the UGC

Since the inception of the University Glee Club of NYC in 1886, there are only five distinguished conductors.

Arthur D. Woodruff 1891-1922
Arthur D. Woodruff (b. 1853) was the first official conductor of the UGC, serving over 30 years and establishing many of the UGC's early traditions and repertoire.
Channing Lefebvre 1927-1961
Channing Lefebvre, conductor of the UGC for 34 years, was also a noted organist and arranger whose name still appears on published works.
Francisco J. Núñez, Conductor
Born in New York City of Dominican descent, composer/conductor Francisco J. Núñez is a leading figure in music and music education.
John Low Baldwin 1961-1999
John Low Baldwin (1923-1999) took over as the conductor of the University Glee Club from 1961. Under his studious yet jovial tutelage the UGC thrived. When John passed away at the turn of the century, Baldwin directed the University Glee Club for the preceding 39 years.

Marshall Bartholomew 1922-1927
Marshall Bartholomew (1885-1978), the prolific conductor, composer, and arranger, was the second person to lead the UGC, taking over from co-founder Arthur Woodruff in 1922.
